What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when people ask you “tell me about yourself.”  💭?

Well I would be blank for a minute, trying to recall like.. Who am I? What am I? What do I do?😶 Yeah.. that blank… but really, how are we supposed to answer that question?🤔

It has been running in my mind ever since Mahesh Babu’s song “Who Are You” came out…

Am I supposed to say “I am a human, born in this world 22 years ago”, etc, etc? Nah, that would just be funny and nonsensical.

So I figured, we basically need to mould our answer depending on the situation, and who we’re talking to.

Imagine you’re just trying to make a new friend, you and your new friend would just be interested in each other’s name, and probably where you stay, or your music or activity interests, right? They wouldn’t go on asking about what your strengths and weaknesses are right?

Now if it’s the case of an interview, where the interviewer is the one asking you to tell them about yourself, then you’ll have to switch on the professional mode.

You can talk about what your professional interests are and what you have been into professionally. You’ll have to tell them about your past, present, and future skills and works or projects… and oh things you are good at (note: only work related😆).

You need to let them know about your aim or goal, what you want to learn, and they’ll especially be looking forward to discovering your strengths and weaknesses.

To deliver whatever you want to say effectively, you need to male sure that your body language shows confidence. For that, try to stay calm, calm yourself down, take deep breaths and instead of thinking that you have to introduce yourself, just talk like you’re explaining your favorite subject to your friend!

And try not to give too much or too less body movement while you are speaking, as it grabs the attention of the listeners.

In addition, be an active listener, keep your ears open to what the listener has to ask you instead of letting any kind of inner thoughts tense you on how to answer. When you listen to the question properly, you will at least be able to give a valid and effective answer rather than being blank.

So just keep in mind friends! Be mindful of who your audience is, try to understand what about you they are expecting to hear!

It’s okay to take a minute to think before you speak, but try your best to put out the right points about yourself to the right people, the right way! Be clear, concise and speak effectively.

All the best!
